1ST CL. PVT. GERRIT VAN DYKE Serial No. 2,046,361 Holland, Mich. Inducted April, 1918. His duties, like his qualifications, were varied. He qualified as a cannoneer, yet was our shoemaker and also assisted Sergt. Reddaway in camouflage. He was a regular attendant on all church services in the neighborhood and enjoyed the advantages of the Y. M. C. A. After the day’s work was done, even if in the early hours of morning, he would light his candle and read the Bible before retiring. He was very tall, broad-shouldered, of vigorous appearance and carried himself well. Quiet by nature and very thorough in the performance of all work at hand. He was much pleased at Christmas time to receive a gift of five dollars from his employers, the Holland Shoe Company, and the assurance that his job was waiting him.
